About This City
Great Barrington is a Berkshires town in Southwestern Massachusetts about 10 miles from Connecticut and New York. Located on the Housatonic River it boasts a vibrant Main Street, an active cultural community and thriving farms. The town is a successful blend of year-round residents and seasonal homeowners and visitors.
The town celebrated its 250th Anniversary in 2011. In those 250 years Great Barrington has been home of Native Americans, pioneers, American Revolutionaries, Shay's Rebels, the first street lighting by alternating current, W.E.B DuBois, a thriving agricultural community and manufacturing and mills.
Today Great Barrington is a great place to live and a great place to visit. It boasts more acres of park land than people. Year round activities include summer hiking, biking, kayaking and canoeing; autumn leaf peeping; and family winter skiing at Ski Butternut. The beautifully restored Mahaiwe theatre is only one of the many cultural attractions within the town which is a haven for artists, writers, actors and musicians.
